Jeff “Ffroe” Roe
1972 – 2007
On December 17, 2007, a mother lost a son, a wife lost a husband, the music world lost an incredible piece of it’s soul, many of us lost a dear friend and brother, and an amazing little girl lost her “Daddy.” Jeff FFROE” Roe was one of the kindest, most generous people I have ever known, with a love for music, family and friends…To those of us who knew him, his boyish laugh and infectious smile were
treasured aspects of a warm and caring soul that existed in his often intimidating
appearance, as though it were our little secret.

Ffroe moved to Denton, Texas in 1990 to attend, and later graduate from North Texas University. He was an active member in the Denton and Dallas Music scenes, playing in Beef Jerky, Function Junction, Decibel, and 2BC. He started Ffroe Records in 1995 to release his own bands’ material, but the label soon became a haven for such musical misfits as Bowling For Soup, Space Cadet, Valve, The FEDS,
97.1 The EAGLE LOCAL SHOW, Rob G and the Latin Pimps, ISD, Beef
Jerky, Function Junction, Decibel, 2BC, and many others…

Jeff was an accomplished Trombone player, record producer, band manager & a true music champion.
He leaves behind a beautiful wife, Megan, and 2 year old daughter, Hudson.

Show organizer, business partner and singer of BFS, Jaret Reddick says “I had to do something…I feel like we all needed to get together and celebrate the life of a true talent and friend of so many in the North Texas music scene. I also wanted to make sure that Hudson had something to help her later in life….A small gift from those of us that were given so much by her daddy…He is missed”

The concert of the year….at least for me that is.

February 28th, 2008 by Richie

nofx.jpg

L-R Erik Melvin, El Hefe, Fat Mike and Smelly

NOFX who are they, what are they and why in the hell do they have a funny name that most people can’t pronounce? Well after doing countless shows on the Vans Warped Tour, going all over the world to play club shows or festivals. Well those bastards are finally making a club stop in Texas after 10 years on thier Fat Wreck Tour! Openers are The Flatliners and No Use For A Name…how is that for a punk rock show!

I have seen this band (NOFX) over 1o times and the more I see them the worse they get, which makes it fantastic! I will be doing a mini following, going to see them in Austin, TX at Stubb BBQ tomorrow and the Dallas, TX show at The House Of Blues. I will take pictures and post up a review of my weekend of the greatness that is NOFX.

Fight back for the environment

February 27th, 2008 by Phil

OK, this is a little heavier of a topic than normal, but I just found this article on CNN.com a little too interesting.  The basic summary of it is a small town in Alaska is suing 24 corporations, including oil and power companies, for global warming.  Their reasoning for this is because global warming is melting ice that helps prevent erosion around the village, and it is slowly beginning to slip into the ocean.  Costs to relocate and help preserve the town of Kivalina have already exceeded $400 million.

Now, why do I find this interesting?  Well, I want to see the environment preserved, as do most people.  Only so much is being done, though, and many corporations have found loopholes in the process.  Also, what sort of penalties have there been for breaking any laws or standards?  Yes, there are some monetary penalties, but how harsh are those?

Even though I think this town will find it hard to win this lawsuit, I would still like to see it happen.  This would be one more way to help hold companies responsible for damage they may be doing to the environment.  With that, it could help encourage them to find cleaner ways to operate, or basically become more green.

Bob Dylan tonight at The House Of Blues, and I was lucky enough to be invited to see such a great legend! He did play last night and tomorrow night will be last perfomance. I will try to sneak in some pictures with my camera phone and give you a full review of the show.

Myspace trying to cut a deal with all 4 major lables?

February 21st, 2008 by Richie

From pollstar.com

Gigs & Bytes:
MySpace Eyes Music Future
Thursday, Feb 21, 2008 1:01PM

MySpace is talking music with the major labels in hopes of repositioning the social networking site as a media company, says the Wall Street Journal. Owned by News Corp., MySpace is reportedly in discussions with all four major record labels. Although the finer points of an agreement have yet to be worked out, speculation centers on two music delivery methods, streaming and free downloading.

While the streaming would be advertising-supported, there are mixed signals regarding what type of downloads would be made available. While WSJ reports that the downloads might play on any portable device, including iPods, thus ruling out any digital rights management technology, the same article mentions a Napster-like subscription model, which would definitely employ DRM, thus ruling out 100 percent compatibility with all players.

But a few issues must be resolved before all parties can reach an agreement. For example, UMG is currently suing MySpace for copyright infringements. And there’s nothing like an infringement lawsuit hounding you when you want to make a deal.Apple Bits
Apple has reshuffled its iPod Shuffle strategy by introducing a 2GB model while dropping the original 1GB Shuffle to the bargain basement price of $49. The new 2GB Shuffle will cost $69.
Apple has also made a deal with Fox Broadcasting Company, Fox Interactive Media, 19 Entertainment and FremantleMedia to sell “American Idol” top 12 contestant performances exclusively on iTunes.
“Idol” fans can purchase performance audio tracks for the iTunes standard price of 99 cents and videos for $1.99. All content will be made available on iTunes the day after the program airs. Fans pre-ordering performances by their favorite “Idol” contestants will receive automatic downloads the day after airing.

“We have some truly outstanding talent this year, and by working with Apple and iTunes, we’re giving viewers another great way to enjoy America’s brightest new stars from ‘Idol,’” said the show’s creator Simon Fuller, who also runs 19 Entertainment. “I’m sure there will be many memorable performances that viewers will want to relive from this 2008 season.”

All I have to say is this….I smell trouble! Then again I might be wrong…very VERY wrong, but we shall see.
