I doubt it is strictly tied to iPods. I would think it was any mp3 player. iPods just happen to make up most of them.
One other thing I would consider is the increase in number of cell phones that are carried clipped to belts instead of in people’s pockets, especially since you see larger ones like blackberries and smart phones. Those become almost as visible as the iPods anymore.
Overall, it seems that people do not hide what they are carrying on them, which just lets potential muggers know who to hit.
